It’s National Poetry Writing Month!

Last year I completely missed it, so this year I am diving in with an extra challenge: to compete in a different AllPoetry contest every day this month. Here are my entries for April 1 and 2:
“Neverending Story”

April is also the always-fun Drawing Challenge Month over at Karine’s April Drawing Challenge. I don’t usually add my art online but I always participate in my physical journal. Check it out!

Just for Fun

I’ve been doing quite a few projects just for fun lately, and I’ve discovered that I have this strong desire to write drama, suspense, and some pretty dark stuff.  I really appreciate the opportunities that these awesome groups and challenges have provided for me and the things I’m learning about myself and my writing through them!

For example, my entries in the In a Sentence competition at Facebook…

And, of course, the Creative Copy Challenges!

The hosts of these activities are muses, writer group leaders, and coaches all rolled into one–and, in a word, awesome.

Here is another poem for NaPoWriMo as well, written as a contest entry:
“Stayed Sentiments”

NaPoWriMo, Days 16-25

More in the tradition of Natalie Goldberg’s exercises… I would love to do some contest entries and/or sonnets before NaPoWriMo is over, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to squeeze them in!

Most of these were all “found” in our front yard during play with my daughter.

I also have a new post up at The Institute for Democratic Education in America called “The Gimme Culture.” In it, I ask for advice on dealing with consumerism with young children. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

NaPoWriMo, Days 5-7

All of these short poems (mostly haiku poems, really) were inspired by Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones, in which she advises you to:

1. Take a pen and paper
2. Write down 10 nouns you see around you
3. Write a 3-line poem about each thing in 3 minutes

I love doing this exercise and try to do it at least once a month. Sometimes I take the word into a completely different direction! Here are three of these poems I wrote this week for NaPoWriMo.

NaPoWriMo, Days 1-4

All of these poems, written for April’s National Poetry Writing Month, were inspired by the Daisy Yellow April Creative Experiments Challenge. You can find out more about the challenge and take part here. The last two were also sort of inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

“Departures and Arrivals”
“The Stolen Tart”
“A Piggy Bedtime Story”

Job Markets; And April = Right Brain Projects Galore

Some posts for today…

Retail Job Market
Retail Jobs Up and Down Across the Country

Health Care Job Market
The Present and Future of Healthcare Jobs

And a new Creative Copy Challenge (I just love this site!):
Challenge 26

By the way, April is the month of National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo), Script Frenzy, and Karine’s April Art Challenge, all things that I really want to take part in… Not so sure it’s doable, but I’m going to give it a try!

I’ve also been keeping up with the monthly Creative Experiments at Daisy Yellow. Her ideas are just amazing! I highly recommend taking part, even if you only do a couple of challenges, because they will make your day richer and give your brain the novelty it craves.
